Somewhere in the archive there is a lengthy discussion of space elevators from a few years back. Now there is an international contest on for development towards a space elevator.

I read about that in some sci-fi book years ago and then somewhere else where they said it was scientifically possible, and I have wondered why it has not been done yet. It would also produce energy ( LOTS ) from what I understand.

Since we now have the capability of making diamonds, the only problem is getting it setup to begin with.

Edit: Well that was Quite different from the way I thought about it.

For those who haven't met this concept (originally popularised by Arthur C. Clarke in The Fountains of Paradise) yet, here's how it works, with a slightly more thorough Wikipedia explanation.

I must admit that the prospect of this becoming a reality still, 30 years after first reading about it, excites me. One of my dreams is that we'll build one of these before my clogs are well and truly popped.
