I just installed Ubuntu 64-bit on a machine, and I thought I'd try out Folding on it for a short while.
However, even though the Stanford site claims that the SMP client is 64-bit only, the 'fah6' application appears to be a 32-bit executable.
What's the score here?
Will I need to run the SMP client in 32-bit mode?
If so, would it be better to simply run the 32-bit version of the OS?

Yes, the ia32-libs would work, since that would let me run 32-bit code. However, I still think it's a bit weird since the Stanford folding page claims that the SMP client is a 64-bit linux client. Confused

fah6 is just the program that spawns the 64-bit processes (mpiexec, FahCore_a1.exe).

You need to be able to run 32 as well as 64 bit.

Daft question, you did download the 'nix client, not the Windoze one didn't you?

Hehe.. same problem here, but only when I run ./fah6 -smp -configonly

runs fine without the -smp

So I installed the 64-bit version of Ubuntu, and then the program did not start at all.
That's why I got confused.

Now I installed the ia32 libs, so the program starts again, but it still only uses one core.
Will it eventually start using more cores?

It would appear that it's working on project 2149, which is listed as a Gromacs unit

Um...I don't see why the SMP client would be for 64-bit OSes only if the actual executable is 32-bit. Are you sure you downloaded the right one?

UPDATE: I just downloaded it to see for myself, and file does report a 32-bit Linux executable. More interestingly, the md5-sum doesn't match. F@H says it's supposed to be

4845d3e7c39f5d3b04e9cd25af8b5e9c

but I get

I think they may have posted the wrong client.

Perhaps they managed to copy the new 6.0 beta version of the single core client to the same folder, and thus overwriting the SMP client.

The windows client needs a password to be set on your account to run, but with ubuntu I've never needed to set one specially to run the smp client. My accounts do have passwords on ubuntu though, so I can't say for sure that you don't need one though, but they're set to login automatically so it's not exactly a bind.

The version 6 client is an all-in-one, it combines the old client with the smp one. You'll be flying in no time, it's just something you have to get used to, I guess!

Yet I can dl a new WU from the same server. Go figure. I just hope it uploads b4 the final deadline later on today.

There was a campus wide power outage at Stanford on the 12th which is still causing problems (e.g. the Collection Servers aren't up yet).

Your unit will transmit when they get it sorted.
