|
|
I'm going to attempt to run Ubuntu 7.10 under Win XP with VMWare.
Actually it's a Ubunto 7.10 desktop vmware image under VMWare player. Hopefully if i can get this up and running nicely, then the SMP client should work as well. (Gave up on the Win SMP client) Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanx.
P.S. I'm running an X2 4200 (Manchester) with 1.5 GB of RAM (3 x 512 Single channel DDR 2.5-3-3-7), my Vid card is only an ATI X300, so GPU is a no go. |

You have come to the right place, or more correctly I should say we have come to the right place. Babychunder and myself have done this a lot.
My first suggestion is to read KillerBeagle's (team 11314 EOC) guide
http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=245911
Where I got started...
pm me if you have any specifics

With three sticks of RAM you'll be running single channel and your memory BW will sook.
I don't think you will finish an SMP WU by the deadline unless you get another stick or chuck one of the three away. Memory will be tight with only 1GB, allocate 384 to the VM, 512 to VMWare and you should be OK. _________________ - Folding for Fun -

Im currently trying this at the mo...
I've given up with Ubuntu 7.10 as it refuses to install under vmware Reverted back to 7.04 which seems to be going alright atm.
Figured i'd give it a bash on the air cooled quad to start with as it now has 3Gb of ram installed I'll report back tomorrow with my findings _________________ More Power Captain! We Need MORE POWER I Tell You!!

I see Can't afford to buy more mem, so it looks like i'm SOL for SMP. I'll keep linux under vmware though incase i find something where it will be really handy.
To Baron.. i downloaded the 7.10 desktop from the vmware apps page, and it works just fine. |

All of my machines are native Linux now (bar the HTPC Vista box), just trying to side step the 1440 pointers and get the 1760's, as BC pointed out to me there worth 1/3 more ppd than the 1440's.
99% of the time the quad only picks up 1440's for iro 1600ppd per client. But today it picked up a 1760 and cracked 2000ppd with the other client sticking at 1600ppd.
So, bang on what Pete says, iro 800ppd per machine extra........ if it picks up 1760's that is
When im feeling a bit braver, i'll try and install vmware on a 64bit Linux host for a tad extra.
****EDIT****
When these vmware machines are running, do i just setup Samba as per normal to enable me to monitor the clients from a windows machine ? _________________ More Power Captain! We Need MORE POWER I Tell You!!

Luck of the draw I guess, it's been a good 70% 1760s with a few 1523s and 1385s making up the numbers for me when fishing with a dual core machine for wu. They work best paired up, a single 1760 with a 1440 gives me +300 ppd and the pair of 1760s +800 ppd. _________________ 50 cores - 147 GHz - surely now over 1.0 mpm??? |

what Ghz for the 1600ppd ?
I only mention this as I am dragging 3300ppd out of a g0 @2.7Ghz pretty much guaranteed. Whereas one of the native linux boxes I've got with the same hardware and the wrong WUs gives ~2200ppd |

3Ghz on the VMware Quad now. Have off loaded the 1385 pointer to another machine and picked up 2x 1760's.

I have got to ask how you
"Have off loaded the 1385 pointer to another machine and picked up 2x 1760's. "
The whole selection process confuses me. My Q6600 B3 gets pretty much 1760s. The X3210 only gets 1440s or the dreaded 1523. The g0s get the same. |

When i started the VMware client, it went off and picked up a 1385.. doh! can't ever remember having one before... 1300ppd. Then set the other client off and it picked up 1760 pointer.
I just waited till the e2140 had finished, then copied the 1385 pointer over to that to crunch instead of wasting it. Then the quad picked up another 1760.. Just hope it keeps getting them!
Selection is weird, i've never really understood it tbh, my E6600 HTPC running vista always gets 1760's, i've never seen it get anything else _________________ More Power Captain! We Need MORE POWER I Tell You!!

There's a parameter "% of time left before deadline" calculated at the end of each WU. The last few (five?) values of this are combined into a performance factor / fraction, which I suspect (but don't know) may affect WU selection. If it dips under 70% you don't get (hardly any) 1760s. If it's above 75% you seem to get (almost all) 1760s. _________________ - Folding for Fun -

Got Win SMP to work finally, just had to add a password of all things. 1st SMP WU is a 1760 pointer, will post later with time per frame.
[EDIT] AMD X2 4200 -- Win XP
Proj 2653 -- 38m:24s per frame. [/EDIT] _________________ When in doubt, kick it until it works. |
