If you run an i7 in turbo mode and let it process with 8 cores and the factory heat sink the temp hits +100C very fast.

Criminy - if my any of my AMDs got that hot, I fear that they'd be molten pools of silicon! For instance, my Opty starts alarming at 75C, and I think it will just shut down at something like 80 or 85

As for coolers, I ended up with a heat-pipe cooler from one company, with a duct from another company with the heat sink on one end and a 120 mm fan on the other (attached to the back of the case) to pull the air straight out of the case. The mobo (sys) temp now runs only about 8C over ambient in the room, and this helps circulate air in the case in general (which also has two 120mm "blowhole" fans).

I installed a Noctua cooler http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?Sku=N126-1006 after a failed attempt with a Coolermaster V8 that resulted in an overloaded power supply with the HD and video not working. That took the temps down into the 50's (C), but with a 260, 8800 GT and 9600 GSO in there it runs in the mid to upper 60's now. Much better Smile

Now down to one Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 that's in a tiny case and overheats if I actually try to use all four cores at the same time. On the other hand, it makes for a very nice home theater PC
Intel Core i7 CPU 920
AMD Athlon(tm) 7850
