By the end of Valentine's Day, we should have jumped up 2 places to 7th spot in the team ranking in Majestic-12. #ni-1 #ni-1

This should also have a very positive effect on DC-Vault, especially considering Team Picard lost another spot today. Twisted Evil

I have found MJ-12 to be too "grabby" when it comes to sharing my computer with me. This may have resolved that issue:

I think this is only because you didnt tell it to stop when the computer is in use:

you can create a profile with no conditions and 0% upstream 0% downstream and a huge archive delay (try 5000)

Then you create a second profile with the condition that your computer had ben idle for more than 1 minute and the bandwidth settings you want.

activate both profiles and the crawler will stop within a few seconds after you touch your mouse (takes some seconds to finish pending requests depending on your number of workers)

Like this ne node runs perfectly in background and should not be slowing you down ...

*The profile specifying the one minute delay and full bandwith must be first, before the zero bandwith profile. And I think that the largest archive delay it will allow is 500.

We're gonna get smacked by Crunchers Inc soon if we can't get some more members to Majestic-12 Crying or Very sad

M12 uses quite little CPU if you're not on a very fast connection, and it works well with projects like SoB and Folding. Give it a try folks!

NewsFlash: MJ12 is not completely silly:

Quote:
If distributed processing can search for aliens, why not web pages?

Inspired by projects that harness spare time on PCs, one programmer wants to hand back control of internet searching to users

Are you worried about Google's growing dominance of the internet search market? Alex Chudnovsky certainly is. To develop a community-led alternative, the Birmingham-based Russian programmer is building a new type of search engine. By harnessing the power of distributed computing, he's already managed to build an index that covers 1bn web pages...

I still say you've got to be a MORON to run this thing Laughing .

Confused

That said, I'm back at it again Very Happy !

It appears we'll take over 4th place from team Chicky Babe Hunters, but it looks like team Crunchers will slowly erode our slim lead over them unless the 5 currently-contributing MORONS on our team gets some help Sad .

So Knights, come on, there's a parade full of MORONS forming. You don't want to be left out Cool . Too bad neither of these teams have a web site we could taunt them on Sad .

I wemt to download this and it said it uses a lot of Bandwidth, if it doesn't I will need direction on how to place it on my upstairs machine. Is this a BOINC crunch?

You can adjust the amount of bandwidth it uses. To install, just follow the instructions. It's not a Boinc project.

It is the entire point of the project to use bandwidth.
The more bandwidth, the more points.

If you have a limited broadband connection, this is not the project for you.
If you have a slow but unlimited connection, like 0.5Mbit, you can run the client set it to use only part of the bandwidth.

On another note, I've noticed that I'm getting about the same speed from both my clients, although one is running on a 2.5Mbit VDSL connection and the other on a 8Mbit ADSL connection. Increasing the number of worker threads above 70 will not increase throughput, and values above 90 will cause the client to restart over and over with short intervals.
Also, even though the client only uses 25% of the capacity of the 8Mbit connection, I get some serious lag when surfing. I don't know much about networks... Is there like a limit on how many open ports you can have on a connection? Does anyone have any tips on how I can make the M12 client use more bandwidth? I've increased the number of buckets to 7, and there seems to be buckets available most of the time, so I son't think that's the bottleneck.
Is there a difference between ADSL and VDSL when it comes to access times?
I'm running the 8Mbit connection through a D-link gateway. Could it be that the gateway is causing the lag?

Hi all!

Just thought to drop by and say thanks for great contribution that your team makes to the project! I hope the search engine will help you find the Holy Grail Smile

Talking of lag during crawling - most common reason for this is high usage of upstream - if upstream is very limited then allowing node to use most of it will result in lag, to beat it you can snooze uploading for period of time or reduce upstream usage at times when actually use computer - say you can create profile that will limit upstream usage during the day (or when your computer is in use), but increase the usage overnight. If in doubt ask in our forum - always happy to help!
