It seems they filled up their work unit storage space and had to stop creating new work and let the system clean itself out a bit before restarting things. The XML stats us stats sites use were also delayed by 2 days or so. I emailed Matt Lebofsky and he indicated that it took several hours for the XML generator to run so it is probably one of the first things to break when things start getting really bad at Berkely.

Anyway, as of now everything is up except for 2 splitters. Good 'nuff for me!

Their hardware is crumbling and they don't have money to get new stuff. As a result, there are relatively frequent outages as hard drives fail and their ancient servers try (and fail) to keep up with user load. Look at their list of hardware towards the bottom of the server status page. All except for one of their servers are in the 300-400 MHz range and they are trying to process a million work units per day on them. I am impressed that they have lasted this long! They are desperate enough that they sent out an email to all users asking for donations. If not enough comes in seti@home may very well have to close up shop.

So yes, they do want users to join other projects - they have been pushing BOINC's multi-project capabilities since the very beginning of seti/boinc and they have encouraged users to branch out. Even if seti dies, BOINC will continue although I obviously hope it won't come to that.

Well that post was unnecessary They shut everything down every Wednesday to take backups and optimize the results table which gets fragmented throughout the week.
