I need a new CPU for the downstairs, I don't want to spend a lot of money, I just want a faster PC. Here are some questions:

1. Which is better 2 GH or 3 GH?
2. How much RAM?
3. Which is better AMD Anthelon or Pentium 4 processor?

This PC is used for FAH and my word/scrabble games.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hmmmmm....

The hardware determining item in the request would be the FAH.

Depends what type of FAH you want to run.

1. The gigahertz count: the higher, the faster (and the more expensive) Current situation for standard intel CPU's would be somewhere around 3 Ghz. Be sure to buy a hypertreaded cpu (HT technology), as this gives you a simulated two CPU's instead of one.
2. RAM: current common memory is around 512 Mb. If you intend to shrub the large units, 1 Gb of RAM might be useful. Again that will cost you more. 512 Mb is plenty for the small units.
3. AMD or Intel. Now there you've got an endless discussion. I'm somewhat of an intel habitué. Nowadays (i've been told) AMD would be faster than Intel. I'm on slippery ice on that one since i'm not familiar with AMD. (Help anyone)?
For routine FAH, actually any current PC will do. Scrabble and word games should not be intensive at all for the machine.

I just want to run FAH like I am doing now and I do not want to spend a months salary on a PC. I don't need monitor, keyboard or mouse as I have several of those and they are all good. I use the wireless mouse and I have 3 of those. My monitors are Nokia and the color is perfect and they are still the best ones I've ever had. So all I need is a good fast CPU.

Does that answer your questions Bm? Wink

In that case, just go to your local Best Buy, CompUSA, OfficeMax, Staples, Office Depot, <insert name of store that sells computers here> and pick one that fits your budget. Or see what kind of deals Dell is running. If your timing is right, you might even get a free LCD out of it. Nothing you can buy these days is going to be horribly slow, but I'd avoid Celerons and Semprons (amd equivalent, sorta) unless it's a screaming deal. The only thing you should really insist on is at least 512MB of ram.

And then install BOINC on it.

This Acer that I bought back in July (?) is a 2.80 GHz Celeron with 512 Mb RAM and an 80 gig hard drive. I haven't used this one for Folding so I don't know how it would go, but it certainly handles the BOINC shrubs well. I've also got FAD running on this one.

To help anwser BmfCb, Intel would be better at Folding.

Intel has always been better at "number crunching" and has a bigger cache to help with that, but Amd is fav. for gaming purposes. It's better at handling graphic's and can send smaller amount of data ffaster needed for gaming.

As for the speed of intel and amd being so diffrent in a way their not, the seriesnumber in amd, such as 3200+ or 3800+ 4400+ ect., if said to be the speed in GHz in intel terms. Maybe somethign to keep in mind when choosing a processor.
