I just realized that I have a couple of machines in my basement--a celeron 566 and a Pentium 233, OS would probably be Win 98 on both (the 233 has 95 now but I'm sure I have a 98 disc somewhere). Is it worth the effort to dig those out and install BOINC? Any particular projects better than others for low-powered computers?

Old machines like that can run Mathematical projects very well.

I have 3 old 500 mhz machines running Euler and a 450 mhz machine running Prime Sierpinski Project (PSP) - PRP

Not sure it would be worth it - especially for the 233... that is awfully slow. If you want to try, I might suggest predictor@home as their shrubs tend to be smaller than most projects. I run a P3 500 doing seti and predictor. It is currently generating about 40 cobblestones/day. So a 233 would likely generate 10-20 compared to > 200 for your average P4 these days.

I have my Celeron 533 on SIMAP and LHC@Home. Both tend to be well within it's capabilities.

Never have gotten into the math projects, but I understand older processers really do hold their own well there.

Boinc ver 5.x won't install on win95. I'm not sure about '98. And I think you need >64MB memory for it to be willing to download any work.

I have a 200MHz Pentium with NT4 running seti. It takes 48 hours to finish a wu, and generates about 14 cobblestones/day.

Predictor wu's finish faster but uses more memory.
