Dear Alpha-fruit,
I'm not sure you are aware of the depth if history behind the topic of the proper spelling of Looney(s). This has been an ongoing heated discussion for a few years now, and much fermented herring has been spilt by both sides. The conversation has been quietly simmering as of late, but it is likely to erupt into full-fledged flame war at any moment, fueled by some perceived slight against one of the warring factions.
Looneys is of course, the plural of Loon, while Loonies can generally be identified by their tendency to crawl into the nearest vending machine coin slot.

That ought to do it!

American heritage dictionary, defines plural of "loony" as "loonies"
No mention of a canadian slang for coinage _________________ 0.0 Giggly hertzes Folding!

Looking carefully at those definitions you so thoughtfully provided:
A loony, looney or luny is a crazy person, plural is Loonies or looneys
The coin Loonie HAS NO PLURAL! Therefore it is forbidden to have more than one of those coins in one place a time. _________________ 0.0 Giggly hertzes Folding!

I don't know about you, but speaking for myself, I am not, nor have I never been, Canadian currency!!!
As to the part about having more than one coin in the same place at the same time, I find this extremely interesting. Are you suggesting that it is illeagal, or that it is a physical impossibility, or do the various coins simply not get along well together and refuse to associate? I would be interested in any of the answers, as it may relate to my current investigations of Loonified Field Theory.

uhm jammie...
if "Loony" pluralizes by changing the trailing "y" to "ies", should not "looney" become "looneies" in a similar fashion?
According to page 12a of my copy of Websters (what does he know anyway), inflected forms of nouns: "The plurals of nouns are shown in this dictionary when suffixation brings about a change of final -y to -i..." and a whole raft of other reasons including "foreign", "irregular", "zero" and "variant" plurals. Since this reference book does not include plurals for Loony or Looney, one must conclude that the correct spelling is either
Loonys
or
Looneys.
Loonie isn't in the book as it was published when Canada had the sense to have a dollar bill. After that, they got loonie. _________________ now, where was I??? |

Are you saying Canadians are looneys/loonies/lunies/luny or any of the other spelling of the horrid word?

Pardon me for correcting you jbyram2, but there is a plural of "Loonie" the Canadian currency.
It is called a "Twoonie" or "Toonie" _________________ KWSN Sir CADCAM of the Wooden Rabbit

That doesn't look anything like any one here, it just looks like a big 'ol bear walking around..
He is kind of fat though... maybe he had two luns for loonch before he had his picture taken.
If anyone has more than two canadian dollar coins, send the extras to me. Americans don't call one of those coins a loonie, or any such, and therefore have no restrictions about how many they can have at once. _________________ 0.0 Giggly hertzes Folding!

Well, it's against my principles, but here is a completely serious reply to your post.

What? you posted the link to the dictionary that PROVES there is no plural; if there were one it would be listed, just like "loonies" is listed for as the plural for "looney"
Americans don't call a Canada dollar a "loonie", they call it a "Canadian dollar", plural "Canadian dollars" We can own more than one, Canadians can't, be cause we have the words for it and they don't. Simple, eh?
And I'm sorry if my mind is not made up. I was just sleeping in it and hadn't put the grey matter back in place before I got dressed. _________________ 0.0 Giggly hertzes Folding!
