I started F@H as my Boinc Seti ran out of work.

I've got this phenomenon twice now:

I do remember Confused .
I wonder if there could be an issue of hard disk access time here?
The system is continuously running challenged (hyperthreads both running at full capacity). I've installed F@H on the c: drive, wich also contains the windows system. This is a partitioned hard disk that contains a second partition. The system runs both folding at home, boinc seti, dimes and any other routine activity i care to perform, such as watching a movie from the second partition. I know that windows sometimes has an issue with disk access times under these conditions.
I don't understand why this should be an issue, since these programs should be designed to run on loaded machines and take slow disk response into account?

Disk access times sounds highly unlikely.
I run Folding on a laptop with a pretty slow HD on which I also sometimes run a few torrents while watching a movie, and I've never had a problem.
More likely would be a heat issue.
Have you overclocked?
Do you have your computer stuffed away in a corner where the cold air supply is poor?
Do you store your laundry in a large pile over the computer?

This line is the killer:
Quote:
[17:51:11] - Couldn't open work/wudata_01.chk

The client couldn't write the checkpoint file for some reason.

Is the disk full? (you can need well over 100MB for the checkpoint files on bigger WUs)
Another possibility is a open file sharing clash. Have you opened the files in another application? (e.g. by running another copy of the client or using one of the third party progress utilities)

I'd go with Mildew.

Folding gromacs is very CPU intense, more so than any other project.

Check your temps, and cooling. Check available disk space also.

Rarely, I've seen FAH go into a large file failure, where it generates large files that take up disk space. Root cause of this is temperature/overclocked stability.

Lastly, sometimes WU just fail; the atoms wind up inside of each other and the math doesnt work any more, and it bombs. If you repeatedly get errors, then the problem is at your end.

Yet another reason not to fall for the lure of the folding pimps.

I'm running an Asus mainboard with asus probe as temperature monitoring tool. CPU is at 47 °C; Main board at 35 °C, which is comparable to previous values. The system is freestanding in a fulltower with six internal ventilators, and one large external one. (no, i don't put clothes on the computer) Confused

No overclocking. I'm using a native 2.8 Ghz hyperthreaded P4.

Negative. System is running in a 40 Gb partition with 26 Gb free space.

Nothing i'm aware of. I have the basic FAH 5.03 installed without any add-ons. Only one session is running (i know i'm only using half of the CPU capacity, just trying to see if anything else happens if the load is reduced).

Thanx for the suggestions. I'll just wait and see if anything else happens for now. The machine is relatively quiet for now as boinc seti it still off the air. I didn't get any more failures in the last 18 hours or so. Very Happy

Update:

I've lost 5 out of the nine first folds in this way.

Either Couldn't open work/wudata_xx.chk or write errors.

One of them in the last two percent of a tinker core.

That is the reason i'm no longer moving up the charts... Crying or Very sad

I've re-installed FAH with all disk access on an unused disk. Hope that helps. I'm half way through a gromacs P1406. Hope that one makes it. Laughing Cool

i'll keep y'all posted.

Update:

Finished 5 WU with the new setup.
No more disk access issues.

Seems The re-install to a less challenged disk solved the problem.

Thanx again for the input Cool .

Course while seti is off line you can always attach to another project like CPDN and help us nuke those darn picards..
