|
|
OK alright then
I need assistance, I have not been able to upload/download work units for seti. I believe this is due to Seti making a DNS change (26 july). As this change should propogate thru the Net to the big wide world. I still cant contact them. I have now turned off my machines.
This was after their previously back log issues which also resulted in (my personal pain & suffering) no WU's and some WU's expiring.
So will my ISP eventually update or can I by pass it ? if so how ?
But I will now change my preferences to a larger cache. And got to upgrade one pc and got another one about to go, so the down time was not completly wasted.
Over all in the last 2 weeks or so I have lost about 10 days crunching and about 40 WU's gone down the drain.
on a eclectic note, I'm running
1 G4 imac 10.3.9
1 G4 ibook 10.3.9
1 xp 2800 xp virus
soon to be crunching hopefully
1 xp 2600 either fedora or overclockix
1 xp 1600 either fedora or overclockix (if ever down loads)
gotta find Elvis |

What IP address does setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu resolve to? (just ping it and it should tell you) I'm pretty sure that is the DNS entry that they changed. It used to go across the cogent link but now it goes through berkeley. It should resolve to 128.32.18.173 - if it doesn't then you can override the DNS servers by placing an entry in your hosts file. /etc/hosts in linux, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in windows, no clue about mac.
You would add a line that looks like this:
Code: | 128.32.18.173 setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu |
Of course doing this will cause it to not work again if they ever change the IP address again. But it might help for now. |

the returned ping was 128.32.18.173, tried overrideing the DNS as you suggested as well, still no joy and had a wee nosy around the mac but alas
so when in doubt reinstall, the scorched earth policy
thanks for your help, MacG most appreciated
hopefully will be shrubbing again soon, but has been quiet with out the 24.7 screaming fans |

well that didnt work, but it felt good
and then it got worse ......
in the downtime I mucked about and got my shubber upgraded and the spread some bits and bobs to build another 2, so a net increase of + 200 hz on my main xp box (the old 2600), and another xp 2600 (old pc) & xp 1600 ( the old bits reassembled plus some)
In the process various drives where formatted and swapped, motherboards a flying and thermal paste on my nose, at the time it was very much fun on a rainy sat afternoon.
So since after the flawed boinc reinstall, the adsl box was next on the list for a jolly good spanking, as it also contains dns info. Alas ..... my password was safely stored on the old box, recently formatted ........
after various attempts, trying to remember said magic words, I appleased my wrath by reseting it, ........
my main box is now a shuttle SFF hooked up to a 14" TV, great for media, anyway I struggled trying to read the fine print (even at low res) many little mistakes were made as I attempted to remember even older passwords (ISP)
any way got there ...... felt so nekkid & isolated with no net,
So back to where I started ....... hmm .......
what can I unplug, format or just reak good old havoc apon now .......

hmm.... setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu is the alias for galileo.ssl.berkeley.edu ... maybe that's the point.....
this is what nslookup tells me:

Also please post a copy/paste of the error messages from the "messages" tab of BOINC after an update is attempted.
Hmm... I just looked at the server status page. It seems the scheduler is actually running on kryten.ssl.berkeley.edu (128.32.18.154) so you might want to see what that resolves to for you as well. |

ok,
this is on my ibook running 10.3.9 boinc 4.43 seti@home 4.18
got my PC on einstein duty now, had to shrub something
so for the
galileo.ssl.berkeley.edu and then 128.32.18.173
173.18.32.128.in-addr.arpa name = galileo.SSL.Berkeley.EDU.
Authoritative answers can be found from:
18.32.128.in-addr.arpa nameserver = sunspot.SSL.Berkeley.EDU.
18.32.128.in-addr.arpa nameserver = adns1.Berkeley.EDU.
18.32.128.in-addr.arpa nameserver = adns2.Berkeley.EDU.
sunspot.SSL.Berkeley.EDU internet address = 128.32.147.25
adns1.Berkeley.EDU internet address = 128.32.136.3
adns2.Berkeley.EDU internet address = 128.32.136.14
this worked both ways and for kryten as well,
my error message is
(cant paste or copy messages to clipboard from boinc ??)
Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed
No schedulers responded
Deferring communication with project for 54 minutes and 34 seconds
so I nslookup the address its trying to use and could not find it,
nslookup
setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
Lookup has started ...
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
So this kinda explains why I could attach the seti project again, but to my feeble computer brain implys that my seti software is looking in the wrong place ? for its updates .....
now why would it go and do a thing like this ..... |

ahh no... only do this:
nslookup
set debug
setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu
then post the answer.
if u open that link (http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi) if a browser u should get an answer like this:
<scheduler_reply>
<scheduler_version>468</scheduler_version>
<message priority="low">Incomplete request received. </message>
</scheduler_reply>

whoopsy daisy
what about this then........
Traceroute has started ...
traceroute: unknown host setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
Lookup has started ...
; <<>> DiG 9.2.2 <<>> http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
;; global options: printcmd
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
so what I dont understand is why boinc/set@home is looking for the server in the wrong place, it used to fine (i didnt muck about with it) & so how do I change it ? with out resorting to precussive maintainence

wohoo!
I'm still not sure what was wrong but hey, as long as it works... Quite possibly a combination of DNS throwing you off for a day or two and then problems at berkeley and the new moon... Or maybe it was the shuttle. They just landed today. They were in orbit jamming your seti downloads! I just know it!
Glad to hear you are back!
