The eighth challenge of the 2023 Series will be a 5-day challenge celebrating Christmas Day! The challenge will be offered on the ESP-LLR application, beginning 31 October 13:00 UTC and ending 05 November 13:00 UTC.
Wait, what do you mean it's not Christmas? The date is OCT 31. 31 in octal (base is 8*3 + 1 which is 25 in base 10. OCT 31 = DEC 25 !!!
(The inspiration for this challenge theme came from this youtube video which has lived in my head rent-free for years. I had to get it out.)
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Extended Sierpinski Problem (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section.

I'm late in joining the Christmas fun. DL 2 WUs but initial estimated time is 6 to 7 days on this old machine? Doubt I can help since this challenge expires Sunday morning, but we'll see if perhaps times improve with further shrubbinatorial activities.
Update: After 14 hours shrubbation these 2 WUs are still 9 days from completion! CPU = I7 @ 3.7 Ghz and 12GB memory @ 800 Mhz. I doubt modern processors (5 Ghz?) cut the time significantly? Is a Loonie Kanigit in charge of this challenge? It does not seem to be well thought out. Either that or Ay needs a new shrubbaahhh.

I don't think anybody would have been able to finish those stupidly long WUs in time for the end of the challenge.
I ended up with 14 sensible WUs and 2 extra long ones like yours. Bit of a pain so I just focused on the sensible ones to get them done and ended up aborting the other 2. _________________ My brain hurts.

I didn't know "sensible" WUs existed in this challenge. Why did these loonies issue "stupidly long" ones? After 4 daze of crunchation, these two still have 5 daze left. I won't abort them because who knows what hidden mysteries of the universe might be revealed? "Sorry! Nuthin Gov'nah!" |

PrimeGrid now has FAST double checking "sensible" and the main tasks "stupidly long".
Using Multithreads can speed up the process, but that has to be set before the units are downloaded. On my system I have 18 cores, so I ran them Multithreaded on 9 cores (two at a time) and did nearly 6 a day. _________________ Watch the movie about me The 4-1-4s: The Original Teenage Hackers (It is only about 12 minutes long.)

The challenge might have gone better if they had explained some of that up front. I have a multi-thread CPU, but they didn't show how to make use of that or even explain the 2 WU sizes, etc. I still have way over 3 days to go on two stupidly long WUs, over a week total. Well maybe I will abort them if someone else can shrub 'em in a few hours. |

MultiThreading and Fast Double Check have been in their forums for quite a while. Sorry you didn't know about it.
Actually on the home page for each project there is some explanation:
CPU MT F
F Uses fast proof tasks so no double check is necessary. Everyone is "first".
MT Multithreading via web-based preferences is available. _________________ Watch the movie about me The 4-1-4s: The Original Teenage Hackers (It is only about 12 minutes long.)

That's a code, not an explanation. Suggest they provide basic / detailed instructions for newbies prior to the next challenge. |

The bottom of that page has the explanations. As I showed:
F - Uses fast proof tasks so no double check is necessary. Everyone is "first".
MT - Multithreading via web-based preferences is available.
Then read the FORUMS and the WIKI to get more information. _________________ Watch the movie about me The 4-1-4s: The Original Teenage Hackers (It is only about 12 minutes long.)
