Hi!

Hope this is the best forum for this.

I've been folding ...er... shrubbing along happily, and could add a 64-way server to my workforce on a temporary basis recently. But then suddenly FAH is not giving out new WUs anymore. My AMD-based client says:
[15:21:54] + Attempting to get work packet
[15:21:54] Gpu type=1 species=4.
[15:21:54] - Connecting to assignment server
[15:21:55] + No appropriate work server was available; will try again in a bit.
[15:21:55] + Couldn't get work instructions.

I'm mostly running GPU-based versions, no older than 6.23, mostly 6.41.

This happens at work, too. The 6850 is idle in that box, and it would be such a fine shrubber...

I have looked the web for indications of a FAH problem and have found none. I see the KQSN team member stats don't move, so this not just a problem with my various machines.

Does anybody have information about what's doing on here?

The Forum is quiet which isn't a good sign. Have you checked the server status?

The forum is very quite at present which makes me think that many people are away on vacation.

I am really sorry I am not able to assist you with this problem KWSN-Crunchy Frog.

That aside the better forum to post in would be:

Ye Olde Help Scrolls
Help with hardware and software issues related to running DC projects (S@H, G@H, etc.)
http://www.kwsnforum.com/viewforum.php?f=5

although no one is gonna stiff you for posting your need here Smile

Searched the web for a solution to your problem as well and was not able to find anything specific to help you.

Suggestion
On a temporary basis you switch to another project until someone is able to get back to you with a solution. Very Happy

Our PotM would love to see your GPU's help us on GPUGRID Very Happy

If you've not changed anything then I would think that it's Stanford having problems. Hope things are coming down the pipeline now! Very Happy

Excellent news if you are spinning up again.

Hmmm...maybe F@H doesn't have a "core" process [yet] that will handle more than a 8-core CPU (various Opteron Interlagos processors can be 12 or 16 core and F@H doesn't know how to use these yet - from what I can tell on various other forums/blogs).

You're lobbing in a boat-load of points recently - can you give us a rundown/inventory of your Shrubbers (CPUs, GPUs, etc) ???
Inquiring minds want to know.

Are you setting the flags to always request big/advanced WUs? If so try normal settings. The server is supposed to ask for big/adv. and if none are available switch down to normal WUs, but sometimes it stops at the first 'No work' response.

Not sure if that's your problem, but I remember seeing it on the MB.

I'm running on two 8-way Intel workstations where I use 6 cores for F@H. One of them works on the 6850, too. The other has a Nvidia Quadra that does not run stable so I stopped GPU work there.

On AMD there is a Phenom-II 905e with two cores on F@H. It has a 5770 but due to Catalyst problems it currently does no GPU work (worked with the 6.x client). I can't get the current AMD driver to run. I tried a few things without success, the next attempt would be reinstalling Win7.

The problem is that the Catalyst control center does not start, but I need it to switch hdmi output...CCC.exe process starts, but quits after a second, no UI, no error message. When I want to open the Display control panel I get an error from the shell. Weird.

Anyway, the bulk of the shrubbery is apparently from a 64 core server box (four CPUs with 8 cores+HT) with 48 active cores. I'll lose that one in a few weeks which is really a pity.

Sorry, I should have volunteered my info before asking for yours. Embarassed

Shrubbing Rig 1:
  • CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE (3.4GHz) - 8192MB DDR3
  • GPU: ASUS GTX-560-ti (448 core, 732MHz) - 1280MB GDDR5
  • GPU: ASUS GTX-560-ti (384 core, 834MHz) - 1024MB GDDR5
Shrubbing Rig 2:
  • CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE (3.4GHz) - 8192MB DDR3
  • GPU: MSI GTX-560-ti (384 core, 834MHz) - 1024MB GDDR5
Shrubbing Rig 3:
  • PS3
When the GTX680 series actually become available (and the prices stabilize), I'm thinking of getting 1 or 2.
I may also upgrade from the Phenom to the FX series (AMD makes FX with 8-core)!

PS: Sorry, I know nothing about ATI/Radeon - I'm an NVidia geek.
