Just had a Tower fall into my lap - Only needed to buy a SATA Drive - HP A6720F (AMD Phenom x4 9550 Quad) - 4GB RAM - Integrated GeForce 9100 (CUDA-Capable)

I usually put in XP Pro SP3 (32-bit) on my machines - This one came with Vista Home Premium (64-bit) - Should I even consider Vista? Should I try Win7?

Also, it has a PCI-Express (x16) Slot - Is the integrated 9100 good enuff, or should I try to plug in another Video Card?

Thx inn advance, my buddies!

If Vista is stable why not. It all depends on which SP's have been added and if the system remains stable. From what I understand Vista is quite buggy and is very resource heavy. Therefore it may take away processing power from your shrubbing.

Not tried Win7 so not able to comment.

I use XP Pro and have found it is a delight to use compared to any of the other offerings from our Much loved and reviled Mr Microsoft Razz and I go back to the early offerings of Windows 3 on an old Amstrad 1512 Lol.

For CUDA stuff Hal9000x86 or Sir Papa Smurph may be able to help you on that.

I've been using Win7 for a while now and have had no big problems. I had Vista for a short while but switched over to 7 when it came out. I think Vista with the service packs will probably work fine. All of my Windows installs in the past worked like Windows... in that they work when they work and fail when they fail. XP included. Vista and 7 are pretty big on resources. 7 not as much as Vista. If you go with those, try tweaking the system (like turning off the fancy display or even going as far as the XP display.

I have one shrubber on Win7 64 using an old Athlon X2 4200 that runs great.

With your 4gig ram, you'll need the 64 bit to take advantage. And don't forget that there are some projects out there that actually benefit from 64-bit.

As far as the 9100... display will be be fine. If you are a gamer or want to shrub the GPU, I don't know but have a feeling a video card is the answer.

Congrats on the new shrubber! #ni-1
