Maybe a dedicated thread will help us loonies figure out how and what is going on with this pentathlon thingy. I'll try to keep this post updated as new projects come online. Here's the basics for the un-initiated:

website: Boinc Pentathlon

when: 5/5/10 - 5/19/10

what: 5 disciplines crunched for 5 days each, some overlapping. Scoring will be awarded by credits granted by the project during the allotted 5 day period per team. NOTE: this is different than the PrimeGrid challenges where you must download and upload a wu during the period.

The Disciplines
Here is the list of disciplines to be crunched. Each discipline will have one project designated which is determined by vote from the participating teams. Individual projects will not be announced until a week ahead of the start date. As new projects are announce, I will try to keep this updated.

Astronomy:
Milky Way @ Home
5/9/10 00:00 UTC to 5/14/10 00:00 UTC

Physics and Chemistry:
Einstein at Home
5/5/10 00:00 UTC to 5/10/10 00:00 UTC

Biology and Medicine:
Rosetta @ Home
5/14/10 00:00 UTC to 5/19/10 00:00 UTC

Mathematics:
Collatz Conjecture
5/12/10 00:00 UTC to 5/17/10 00:00 UTC

Alternative:
FreeHAL
5/10/10 00:00 UTC to 5/15/10 00:00 UTC

Let the strategizing begin!

So someone could get a lot of completed WUs done beforehand and then just report them back during the time of the Pentathlon?

That is sounding like the case. This could be a point of contention for the future of their pet challenge series in future years.

I was just reading over at PG of one guy who gathers a whole bunch of work through one host, then lets other hosts complete the work before sending all work back through the original host. Looked like one little shrubber had crunched tons of WUs, but in reality, he was just caching and assigning stuff to the one box. I believe he might have even been from seti germany. Don't quote me on this, haven't gone back to double-check my memory. But SG might be experts at caching in their own challenge...

The other side of the coin is that projects like Einstein requires a quorum before awarding credits. So, there is a chance that much of the work done during or before the 5 day period, won't receive credit until after. Only a portion, but it may be some.

Maybe you could ask the people putting together this Challenge for clarification as this will just confuse and consume us.

OK, so I'm bringing my massive 12 core farm to bear. I intend to single-handedly tip the balance in favor of the team.

Or at least improve my position of 649th in Einstein.

So, as I see it, the more results you cache the better we'll get... I know it's not the intention of this Panteloon but as Papa Smurph said, it would probably come to the point where the team who caches the most will win Confused

I know that a lot of the code in the optimized Einstein app got put into the stock app; but just curious if there's a new optimized app which gives faster crunch times #ni-1

Set all other projects to NNT and only have Einstein or the challenge project able to get work, clearing out what you cna before hand Download a very large queue, 7 days, 10 days or whatever you can complete before the deadline for that aspect of the challenge, just be careful to not go past deadlines. Horde WUs, then suspend project; when the other stuff is clear, assuming you can give yourself enough lead time, suspend network activity and crunch away at Einstein or whatever.

Used to work wonders for LHC, with the exception that on LHC one didn't need to suspend network activity as one wanted to keep those refreshed before they set their units to a quota per CPU.

FreeHAL is the "alternative" project 5/10 - 5/15.

Einstein, the first Pentathlon event kicks off tonight at 8:00 p.m. EST (U.S.). Check it: 00:00 UTC = midnight minus 4 hours for EST, correct?

Yep, 5/4/10 7:00 PM CST (Chicago) or 5/5/10 7:00 AM CXT (Christmas Island). #ni-2

Looks like the caching issue may only be a problem for the first project as of now. Milky Way doesn't allow you to gather too many ahead of time as they put a limit on WUs and FreeHAL is another where it's not so big of deal. There can be an issue with FreeHAL though, running virtual machines.

The FreeHAL admin has limited you to 1 VM per host, I think, but some greedy people might disobey that limit... #ni-1
