...PSU fried. Got home from work and could smell that smell that cooking electronics make. Spent 10 minutes trying to find it, gave up because it went away. Shut down BOINC, played a game for a few hours. After I was done with the game I fired BOINC back up and immediately smelled it again, stronger than before. Then there was an audible bzzzZZZZZTT. System stayed on, didn't even flinch. I, on the other hand, promptly unplugged it and got a good strong whiff of electrons doing things they shouldn't be.

Soo... my main rig is all torn apart with no PSU. Replacement 550w is ordered, probably won't be here until the middle of next week. I have another 550 I'm going to try to hack in there temporarily, as I suspect it's also going bad, just not as advanced as this one.

On a more serious, scary note, I'm glad it did this while I was here. The movie-in-my-brain has no difficulty changing the scenario from me cussing at it as I unplug it, to me getting a phone call at work that my house has burned down. That's probably the scariest part of a cheap PSU, they have no sense of self preservation. The "good" PSUs will all shut themselves off for over volting, shorts, and temperature.

But if you have REALLY cheap PSUs (Logysis comes to mind) they just blow with no warning and don't burn up...

Ben there, done that, bought the book, saw the movie, AND got the t-shirt...

Congrats on not burning down the house...

No joke lol. This one was a Raidmax branded POS that came with the case. All told, it was worth the little $ it cost me. Ran 17 mos 24/7 with my overclocked stuff drawing quite a bit of juice.

And since the PC was still running when I yanked the plug I think all of my components are ok. In a cruel twist, the replacement PSU was $49 with free shipping. The entire case, 17 mos or so ago, was $69 with free shipping lol.

Going with an active PFC PSU rated for constant operation. We'll see how that goes. It's only 530w, just like the one that died, but it's rated for like 12-15% better efficiency so it's actually 50+ more watts of usable power than the one it's replacing.
