Hey I-run-Genlife guy, you might wanna make your client backoffs more aggressive. Was watching my machine and wow 6.10.3 is spamming the hell out of you.

What is this number? I just released G/L for new work, then went and did an Update - Am I doing something wrong?!? _________________

What'd be funny is if he had a seperate URL for us Kaniggits that we could attach to, and get work where it isn't available to some others (like boinc@australia)... Chances are this is temporary though; and there'll be more work available latter on. _________________

6.10.3 is the BOINC Manager I run. The newer versions (at least up to .6) are all worse, broken schedulers again, bla bla. 6.10.3 is rock solid for me, with both MW and Collatz, so I'm not budging.
No, has nothing to do with you lol. Was saying MY machine is spamming him because his backoffs aren't aggressive enough (i.e. backoff=how long the server tells my client to wait before contacting it again). _________________

Well now.....
The WU recycler runs on the hour and half past the hour - so there is always a fresh set of work at those times
The current set of work is large than previous ones and so I'm getting to the point where disk space on the server is becoming an issue again (and, No, I can't just add more disks to it).
Ni!

you could let the grunts keep the work on their machines.
just up the maximum # of work on users computers _________________ a.k.a. Licentious of Borg.........Resistance Really is Futile.......

Afraid that does not help...BOINC keeps the original WU on the server until a successful result is returned (does this in case a WU is never returned so that it can re-send out to another client).

Hmm, almost looks like an optimized app could help in more ways then 1. Perhaps both giving peeps more credit (like would help us take down boinc@australia a notch ), and optimizing for disk space useage... I think some projects looked at the latter, when for reasons of networking useage they wanted to cut down on the network bandwidth they needed for uploads/downloads. Especially where their projects were comming close to capacity in available network B/W, and simply buying a faster network connection wasn't an option.
But what would be possible in that regards, hmm... And an obvious/perhaps, but immensly time consuming method, putting some of it into assembler, would be quite time consuming, especially as different platforms come into play. Course that might allow for the shrinking of the size of WUs, but not necessarily the data sets themselves....
Another method, which some projects have resorted to, is storing/sending the data in compressed format. Don't think CPDN sends all it's data for a WU uncompressed; then of course when a CPDN WU gets re-uploaded to the server, there is a step to prepare the files at the end of the WU, before sending it back up. In large measure, the argument for compression can be to keep the network transfer sizes down, but if it saves it on the server exactly as it sends it, might cut down on the space it takes also.
If the problem is the number of non-returned results, nudging down the deadline ever so slightly might also help alleviate that a little bit... _________________

I made an ICC opti-app for 64-bit linux using up ssse3. It works but I haven't timed it yet to see if it makes a decent improvement. Timing will come when I have time, as well as versions set up for more platforms. Gonna smack the spe compiler around on the ps3 also and see if I can make a usable app this time around. If the ICC app makes an improvement I will give it to fang so he can ask for volunteers to test it. I'm thinking we can find some around here.

I will see about timing it in comparison to the gcc app when I get home. If it works faster I'll set up an app_info.xml file for it and you can stress test it. _________________ Some days are worse than others. |

921 WU's ready to send now... 10.7K in process. I'm terrified of what creatures may be lurking within these larger units.... |

I think we "upset" Free-DC when we passed them - I can see laurenu2 has cranked back up again.

It'll be funny if they get upset, only to see us pass boinc@australia That would be a funny one right there.
Hmm, talk of an optimized client sounds oh so tempting right now. And oh yeah, speaking of which d/l one for Milkyway.... Shaved 25% off processing times _________________
