If you can get it to the login screen use ctl+alt+F1

It should open up a console, all text based. ctl+alt+F7 should close it.

If you can't then start the recovery console from your boot manager.

I might be able to give you some better ideas when I'm awake at home tomorrow to look up package names and walk thru some ideas. But if you found a workable fix the above should get you to where you can use it.

See if there's a "The Missing Manual" for Ubuntu. I've seen some others in the series, and they're fabulous.

Otherwise I would find the bible series.

No matter what you do, see if your library has anything. No sense buying these things until at least you find something that works for you first.

Insights I can offer from a long-time DOS and Windoze user that hasn't been using Ubuntu all that long, and also a fellow BOINCer (and Knight):

* "sudo" is pretty much the cure for all ills. Well, many ills, anyway. It gives you very close to root privileges temporarily (it times out after a while).
* Make sure that you set permissions properly. I think this can be done with a right-click in the GUI, and chmod in the CLI What I found in trying to run an install script on my first linux box, and it wouldn't do anything until I changed the permissions to allow it to execute.
* Accessories/Terminal works just like a DOS window in Windows.
* You have at least 6 (oops five, can't do simple arithmetic!) CLI windows in addition to the GUI window. The way to open these is control-shift f1 through f7. f7 is the default for the GUI. Try opening a second window (e.g. f1), then run: sudo top. The login is the same as your regular login, and the sudo password is the same password as your regular login. top shows you what process are running, you can toggle to see more with capital A
* "man" is your friend - e.g. man chmod. Note that it's control-z to exit (as are many commands, like top)
* What I generally do when I try to run my cli-only box is take advantage of my KVM and do internet searches for whatever. For instance, the man page for boinc_mgr is posted online, and I find that easier to read than on the CLI, and I can search for people that have had the same problems.
* Though it was kind of hard for me (as much experience as I have), and to climb the learning curve, I simply had to look up every little thing for a while until I could put enough of the puzzle pieces together. Again, I usually did this on my Windoze boc, taking advantage of my KVM.

[edit]Oh, yeah - another thing that is your friend. When you use commands (like the CLI boinc status) that scroll, try piping to "less" e.g.: ls | less It works better than "more" because it scrolls both ways! Being an old DOS guy, I imagine you were aware of command queueing? I'm not sure how many it is by default in the CLI or terminal window, but it's a LOT. Take advantage of this.[/edit]

This is a very good book, and it's application (e.g. GIMP) oriented, rather than system admin oriented.

Yes and no. Microsoft (via Vista) has FORCED vidcard manufacturers to CLOSE (and ENCRYPT) their drivers. See: A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection

sudo apt-get (I think). Or just use synaptic, though that may not get you beyond the version supported by Ubuntu.

Actually - older hardware is likely to be better supported.

how do you get the package manager download something if you can't log in?

The package manager requires the GUI. You can do the same thing with the CLI, even though it is a PITA

Ok, Here I go....

I need to install the Nvidia 185.xx drivers that I have downloaded from Nvidia's website.
Quote:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.36-pkg2.run

Now the fun begins.....

I have uninstalled the 180 driver that came with ubuntu, and I have also
Quote:
* development tools like make and gcc are installed
* the linux-headers package matching the installed Linux kernel is installed
* the pkg-config and xserver-xorg-dev packages are installed
* the nvidia-glx package has been uninstalled with the --purge option and the files /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx and /etc/init.d/nvidia-kernel do not exist

additionally I have followed Yankton's directions
Quote:
Make sure you have kernel headers installed. Make sure you have build-essential installed. Make sure you have linux-source installed. Make sure you have gcc installed.

Make sure any other video drivers you installed are uninstalled.

Now what????

I think that I need to reboot and when the user prompt comes up I hit ctrl+alt+f1. This will bring up the console, Right? then I have to shut down the x-server (can't remember how) and install the downloaded package (also can't remember how), then restart the x-server and reboot. I am really quite sure that I have forgotten multiple steps. I feel like such a Noob Crying or Very sad

reboot into safe mode.

ctrl+alt+F1 if you are at a graphic login

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

just to make sure nothing using the video is active

chmod +x on your driver/toolkit/sdk files

sudo ./nvidia-whatever the cuda driver package filename is

sudo ./whatever your cuda toolkit file is

./the cuda sdk if you are installing that also

when you install the driver it should offer to modify xorg.conf for you to point it at the new driver, let it do it's thing.

don't worry about restarting the x-server from this, just reboot.

I just did this on my ubuntu box, but I'm annoyed with ubuntu and will be installing gentoo on this box in the near future as well.

Are you sure you want the 185 drivers? I think the 190 is what I ended up installing.

The 190.xx driver is a beta driver, but the GpuGrid post said "185 at least"

If you think that 190's are ok that is what I will do. also do I need the cuda stuff? I have never put it on Winblows but that is a different animal....

One more question.......you said
Quote:
chmod +x on your driver/toolkit/sdk files

I really don't mean to be thick but, I am pretty sure "on your driver" is something different. should I replace that with the file name of the new driver?

The book I bought is really kinda vague on the exact commands I need. I might have to buy another more technical one.

sorry. I'm running 190 and gpugrid is rocking along!

I don't mean chmod +x on your driver/toolkit/sdk files, I mean on the INSTALL files before you execute them

I believe you need the cuda driver/toolkit. not sure about the sdk, but I installed it anyway. I tried just the regular nvidia driver and boinc wouldn't recognize it.

The only thing I did different was I went into init 5 and then booted it back to the command prompt and killed the gdm. I'm thinking that was just extra work, but if this doesn't do it then after you get logged into the recovery console use 'telinit 5' then use the ctrl+alt+f1 to get your console and proceed with the rest. I got this off of the nvidia site somewhere. if you need it I can track it back down. nvidia isn't overly linux friendly when it comes to installing drivers.

It's best to go to NON graphical first. Ubuntu, being something special, requires telinit 3 (i think). This will shutdown gnome/kde and you'll end up with a cli terminal.

To install the drivers you don't have to "chmod" them, running
Code:
bash <driverfilenam>
will start the script.

I tried driver, sdk, older versions, newer versions, ... and finaly installed my trusted slackware. (actualy slamd64 which gave other problems) and using the older nvidia drivers finaly got it working.
It's been doing that since about a month and only gave problems when i rebooted the system. I got three wu's with "computation erors" but since then it works like a charm.

I did once get gpu-grid working on the on-board 8400 under ubuntu using the ubuntu driver update, but since it took about 24 hours to coplete about 2 % i aborted the job Wink

Erland.

Ditched the Ubuntu yesterday, main box loaded up with Gentoo and is screaming right along. Used the 190.25 nvidia drivers and 2.3 of the cuda toolkit. great video and boinc 6.6.36 is screaming along. I just have to reinstall those optimizied apps I was using, will attack that tomorrow probably.

I'm not really a Ubuntu fan myself and have heard a lot of good about Gentoo lately. I think i'm going to give it a try too.

Well, it's also Debian based. Everything is compiled. If you go for a gui and everything else to make your desktop expect to be compiling for a day to a up to two (depending on what you want). If you want to use cuda on it, let me know after you get the basics on, as the drivers and cuda toolkit I have on are masked, but I was using them on another box so I used them anyway. Everything runs faster on gentoo as it's all compiled for the box it's on. I strongly suggest having a second computer there with the gentoo installation handbook open so you can go through it at the same time and look up any issues you may encounter.

Cheers!

Well, after starting a brag thread about changing over to Ubuntu and spending the last whatever amount of time going from Ubuntu to Fedora to OpenSUSE and a little bit of a dabble with Mandriva, and then jumping backwards and forwards between Ubuntu and Fedora, I've reluctantly gone back to xp. Why?
Well because, I could get some things to work how I liked them in one distro and some things to work how I liked them in another distro. Unfortunately I couldn't seem to get everything working how I liked in just one distro. My preference is still for Ubuntu but after shedding buckets of frustrated tears for days and days trying to get the old pci tv card (from the old Acer) working and then the oldish usb digital tv doovalacky to work, then the new usb digital tv doovalacky, I finally gave up.
You see I had to record an ad to analyse for a Uni essay and I was running out of time, and the Steve cat had knocked down and smashed the vcr Rolling Eyes . Pure desperation made me change back to xp. The old pci tv card still doesn't work so it's probably cactus, but the new usb one does work so all is not lost.
