I need help with this, as it is part of my figuring out what is wrong with my machine (it's crashing a lot nowadays, even for a Windoze box),

So here's the question: When the computer is booted up, but nobody logged on yet, does it still run BOINC? I'm running the 6.6.20 client.

Thanks. #ni-1

It depends. If you have the protected application execution box checked, runs as an unprivileged user account. Click the advanced tab when Boinc gets to the install options and there's a blurb about it. Good luck getting the machine stabilized.

Thanks on both counts (the info and wishing me luck). As it turns out, it was a weak PSU. Kind of disappointing, as it's a 600W Cooler Master, and I'm not running anything all that demanding. OK - the Opty is kind of a current hog, and I have a single, very modest vid card.

I figured out the problem by watching the 12V line in real time, which I can do with a utility that came with the mobo. My guess is that what was making it shut down was the collapse of the 3.3V line, and I don't know that for sure.

What I do know is that yesterday evening, I put in a new 430 Watt Thermaltake PSU that I had lying around, and it's run without a hitch since.

My pleasure. That's odd about the PSU. One of my boxes has a 600w Cooler Master and I haven't had a bit of trouble with it. I've probably just cursed myself Rolling Eyes
