I'd have to do it online as I'd have to drive 3-4 hours for the nearest store. Though if I went and bought everything at once, the gas would probably cancel out shipping so it still might be worth it.

I have a retail store here locally, and that's how I do all my shopping with them. They've done a good job there. I sometimes order online for local pickup, which is really fast.
And they're about 3 decades old, so they must be doing something right.
Interestingly enough, NewEgg used to whoop Microcenter on CPU prices, until the latter started this Internet pricing bit where they match Internet pricing, even at the retail store. I have noticed that they generally have a good price on C2Qs, and the i7 920 or whatever the relatively cheap one of those is. I'm not even checking AMD prices any more, because the only AMD chip I would use right now would be another BE2300, because they are so low power. My next box will actually be an upgrade for my son, with a C2Q or an i7 in it.

The Microcenter near me has had the i7 at $229 for at least a couple of months now and it definitely makes it tempting to go that route, especially since there are more and less expensive motherboard options coming out. Either way, it's hard to go wrong. They have the new Q8200 chip for around $150. I got lucky and got one for $99 the first week MC had them in the store. It's not as fast as a Q6700, but it's pretty fast.

Yeah, no kidding - a C2Q-anything is going to be fast. Even more so with the i7 - so what if the 920 isn't the double-throwdown "extreme" edition (whatever that means)?
If I were in any position to buy either right now (which I am unfortunately not), mobo prices would probably still steer me to the C2Q

That's a good point. The mobo I got for the 8200 was $100 with a PCIe slot on it, but also has obboard HDMI. They had an Antec desktop case that came with an Earthwatts 380 for $89, throw in some RAM, HDD and video card I already had an there's a relatively cheap shrubber. Definitely less than half the cost of my i7 build.

I've got an i7 920 as well.
Replaced the stock cooler for a Scythe Mugen because with 8 clients I managed to get the cpu temp over 80 C.
With some simple tweaking I've overclocked it to 3,3GHz and it even runs more stable then it did with default Asus Bios settings. (dont know what was wrong there)

Supposedly it will stay stable up to 3.8 with a good cooler. I've seen that in a couple of articles.

Interesting. I can OC mine 15% using the Asus utility, but as soon as I move it up to 16% the system freezes up. Cooling isn't a problem.

Yea, mine was able to run at 3,8Ghz as well, but it gets a bit hot again with full load and case fans in silent mode. (how i like it)
Adam, try setting BCLK to 166 with;
CPU voltage 1,35V
DRAM bus voltage 1,64V
QPI/DRAM Core voltage 1,35V
I am running with these settings for over a month now.
If these settings are stable for you, then you could voltages a bit to reduce temperatures. (might become less stable)

Try under clocking the memory just a little first. Then do your overclock in the bios. Don't know why, it just does better that way. Once you get your cpu stable bring the memory back up and see how it does.

i7 with cooler master v8 and 6gb ddr3 memory... perfect. i7 is the most futureproof and the only familly that works properly with ddr3, definatly worth it.
