My current shrubber runs all of the games that I currently play (WoW and DDO), so I don’t really need a gaming rig at this time. Down the road I will probably upgrade my new machine to be a gaming rig, but that will be mid-fall next year, maybe later.

ooooo which realm are you on? horde or alliance?

Ok I have almost totally reworked this PC. I have decided that I will purchase a PC with todays parts using slightly older technology (so no PCIE 2.0, no DDR3, etc...).

This should give me a much improved gaming machine (compared to what I have now) and when I purchase a new machine late next year, all of the new goodness will be out and hopefully at a more reasonable price.

With that said, lets have a list:
CPU - Intel Q6600 Quad 2.4GHz 1066 FSB - $280
RAM - Corsair 2x1GB dual channel 1066 FSB - $121
Motherboard - ASUS PK5-E 1066FSB - $142
CASE - Cooler Master Mid Tower - $50
PSU - P&C Cooling 610w - $130

Now my question is this for those of you that know video cards:
The new GeForce 8800 GT, I know it will work in a PCIe x16, but will it out perform a GeForce 8800 GTS? I ask because the GTS is designed to work in a PCIe x16, however the GT is designed to work in a PCIe 2.0. So when the GT "scales back" to run in the PCIe x16, will it still out perform the GTS?

I don't know about 2.0 or 16x but I beleive that I would not buy a gts at all unless the price were about 1/2 and I could buy two for SLI

Ok got the new shrubber on its way:

CASE - $70
MB - ASUS P5N32-E - $200
CPU - Intel Q6600 - $280
RAM - Corsair DDR2-800 2x1MB Dual Channel - $47
HD - Western Digital 160GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0 GB/s - $60
PSU - 610w, 49A rail - $130
GPU - GeForce 8400GS 256MB - $40
AS5 - $6
OS - Windows XP Home - OEM - $90
DVD Burner - $38

Totals out at $961. This gives me plenty of shrubbing power, motherboard is ready for the new Intel chips, cheap video card gets me going until people actually have the 8800GT's in stock, SLI allows me to run two of them, and should I go to a 64bit Vista down the road I can get two additional sticks of ram for 4 gig total.

This allows me a pretty good deal of upgradability plus gives me a pretty darn good shrubber for the time being Smile. I did not, for the time being, buy an aftermarket heatsink. If I see that things are getting too hot, then I will pick one up at that time. I intend to use my existing monitor (which is cool that the cheap video card I got actually has VGA output), and will use the provided sound card for the time being.

When I decide to go Vista 64bit in roughly a year or so, I will replace the GPU with 2x8800GT SLI, add two more 2x1GB Dual Channel ram, and probably bump the Q6600 to the Q6800...if not one of the new Intel chips.

This is true, but I am not going down that road until either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray is dead....which may leave me waiting a while given the companies/studios behind each one.

Why wait - there are machines that play both HD and Blu-Ray, and they're getting cheaper all the time

At this point I would not go with HD DVD. Blu-Ray appears to have "won". Time will tell of course.

An "update" on this system. I went from just over 200 shrubs a day on an old P4 2.8, to almost 1900 shrubs a day. This machine, using these parts and this OS, grants me 1700 shrubs a day. I am sure if I went with a flavor of Linix, Over clocked the CPU/Ram, or didnt play games on it while it is running I could get more. I would imagine this machine could be pushed into the 2300 land w/o too much effort...but im too lazy for all of that. When Intel finally launches their new chips, and the current Quads drop in price, I will probably build me another one Smile.

Wish me luck, I am trying Age of Conan tonight for the first time. Being the first day of general public access I am sure the servers will be very stable Rolling Eyes

Wow, 9600+ views to this post....wonder if I can get it to 10000.
Would I hold a record if I do?
Would ducks serve me bacon?
Would pumpkin write a lymric about it?
Would Phast Phred go back to his motor cycle Avatar?
