I can't tell you exactly why, but I've always liked that story. It says a lot about the way we communicate, and how the form of presentation can misrepresent the information that is presented - if you are not paying close attention. It may help put it perspective if you add 50 years to all the dates in the story, otherwise the sarcasm gets lost in implausibility. In may also help to know there was once a belief (among some) that tomatoes poisonous.
In any case, you don't have to look too hard today to find people making claims that don't sound so very different, with claims of the awful/wonderful and misrepresenting the real information on what is.
Long story short, I'm going to post about science that amuses me, claims that annoy me, and statistical issues I want to share.
I hadn't mentioned it, but I also started a second blog to talk about games and statistics, which is a keen interest of mine. I already had that name picked out. |
