Counting just the Knights I am 504th in SETI' s table.
Hooray for me.
I'm curious about other peoples rigs.
I have an AMD 2000 which I realise is quite old and I've read mentions here of dual-core etc.
So
what you got?

But Dwaaarling, dual-core is just so last year; to get invited to all the right do's, you just must have a quaddie. All the best shrubbers have them and nowadays you just won't get anywhere without the absolute latest in accessories.

But seriously, I'm putting together basic shrubbing Q6600's for under £500, so if you're considering a new machine, try to strech the little bit extra (£50?) for a quad.
Don't be put off by the thought of building your own computer; it's pretty simple - I can have a new machine up and shrubbing less than 3 hours after the bits arrive.

The (current) Dentery:
1 x AMD Athlon XP 1800+
7 x AMD Athlon x2 3800+
1 x AMD Athlon x2 4600+
2 x AMD Athlon x2 5600+
1 x Intel Core2 Duo E6300
4 x Intel Core2 Quad Q6600
1 x AMD Phenom 9500 (quad-core)

Unfortunately, I think I've reached the thermal capacity of my flat; low 20's inside with 0C outside and windows open! So I'll probably have to start replacing machines rather than adding more.

If you think it's too warm, you could probably scrap the 1800+ without even noticing the difference in RAC Rolling Eyes
That thing is probably using about as much electricity as a new quad core, with only 1/6 or less of the RAC output.

I agree with Al, the Q6600 is the hot ticket "bang for the buck" wise right now. My Q6600 brings in about the same credits as the Mac, but the Q6600 cost $600 to build as opposed to paying $2200 for the Mac. The other thing is the power, the Q6600 and the Phenom both take less use less power than the P4 Prescotts (although the P4's keep the office nice and warm on cold days here in Ohio).

1 x Apple Mac Pro (2 x Intel Xeon X15150 dual cores) : Mac OSX or Linux
1 x Intel Quad Q6600 : Windows XP X64 Pro
1 x Intel P4 D820 : Windows 2000 Pro or Linux
1 x AMD Phenom 9500 (Quad) : Linux
1 x AMD Athlon x2 6000+ : Linux
1 x AMD Athlon x2 5600+ : Linux
1 x AMD Athlon x2 4600+ : Linux
1 x AMD Athlon x2 3800+ : Linux
2 x Intel P4 Prescott : Linux
1 x Intel P4m : Windows XP Pro or Linux

Must be the Phenom's, anyone who's bought one is probably slightly "touched".

Excuse me but exactly where did you get That number?

I am considering a quad build and I am getting a price far in excess of that.

ASUS MAXIMUS EXTREME LGA 775 Intel X38 $349.99

ASUS EN8800GT/G/HTDP/512M GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 $299.99

Thermalright HR-03 Rev A VGA Cooler $43.99

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor $260.00

Thermalright SI-128 SE CPU Cooling heatsink $59.99

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 239.00

That is $1253.99

Granted you don't need that video card or cooler if you are not a gamer, and this is a DDR3 board. But those things do not add up to $600.00

But I also have a case, power supply, monitor, keyboard, mouse and operating system.

even if I build it with a DDR2 board and memory it comes to $850.00

Well you can see all my current rigs here. The ones with 0.0 RAC are old hosts I can't delete from LHC because of their database problems. Sad Some of them are personal systems at home and a couple are computers at work that I can use from time to time. But I am about to build myself a Phenom system. I know they weren't as good as promised but what can I say... I'm kind of a sucker for AMD. Plus I still have hopes and dreams of them getting a big kick int he butt when they finally move to a 45nm fab process early next year.

I got the parts in the mail on Monday but lost power that night because of the ice storms (see the thread I just started about that) so I haven't been able to build it yet. #Mad I will be swapping parts from existing boxes and upgrading them as well. I think the 2800+ will be retired.

Sir Papa: There's a difference between a main rig and one used only for shrubbing.
If you just need the computer for shrubbing, you can go with a gfx card for $50, or even integrated graphics. That'll save you the money for VGA cooler too.
Also, don't go for DDR3 yet. Twice the price, no real difference in performance.
I'm pretty sure you could settle for a cheaper MoBo to. I got an Asus P5K for $170 in Sweden, and I think electronics are cheaper in the US. $350 for a MoBo sounds expensive.

MacG: I know what you mean! I'll probably get one of those Phenom thingies some day too! #ni-1

My current costings (UK, ex VAT):

AMD machine -
£136 Phenom 9500
£ 10 Akasa AK-876 cooler
£ 86 Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4
£ 34 2 x 1GB OCZ Platinum PC2-6400 memory (CL 4-4-4-15)
£ 24 GeForce 7300LE graphics (cheapest on offer)
£ 24 Case c/w 500W PSU, 1 x 12cm fan, side vents
£ 25 160GB HDD (more than enough for BOINC)
£ 9 DVD-ROM (I've got plenty of writers, no need for more)
£ 2 Fan (at rear)
£ 43 XP Home (Vista is pretty useless for shrubbing, but the same price)
£393 TOTAL (~£470 incl. carr. & VAT)

Intel machine -
£137 Q6600 GO (the 95W version)
£ 59 Gigabyte GA-G33-DS3R (with on-board graphics)
£147 all the rest as above (no video card)
£343 TOTAL (~£410 incl. carr. & VAT)

On top of this allow £100 for a 19" LCD monitor and a reasonable keyboard & mouse; I run mine on 4-way KVM switches so only need these every 4 machines.

US ~ x2 (plus any local sales taxes)

Remember, these are basic shrubbing machines. Adding decent graphics, Blu-Ray writer and other bells & whistles can seriously damage your wallet.

Yeah, upon further evaluation, The Asus board is Way over priced as is DDR3. the two of those are almost $700. When I work out a system with ddr2 then the core quad and amd x2 systems are both in the 850.00 range and that is with a $300 graphics card.

So I must agree that if I had the money to build a dedicated Shrubber I could do it for between $5 & $6 bills, mabey less.

Damn, I am off to buy some lottery tickets, Back soon........ #ni-1

Please, good people,
there is no point in just quoting serial numbers, only those in the know will understand.
ie mobo? ( I know now that means motherboard but it took a while. Just how many people do you want to alienate?)
Some of us would like to know what the stuff is.
Thanks

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I know what you mean MacG. I just spent 15hrs building and loading 3 machines when my new egg order got here.
That was yesterday. The sleep deprivation is really kicking in......

I am really a newb when it comes to posting in the forums. Please reply with how to get those sweet formatters for your stats. I will post my weblink for my account
http://stats.kwsn.net/user.php?proj=all&cpid=0a1b5b4e4b7a8b2df73c25215d9cdc2d

Total Avg RAC 1000+ now and Climbing. Yes Yes Yes

Anyways just wanted to comment on all those 4400+'s you use. Seems like the RAC's are all over the place. Only the 400-600 ones are on 24/7 correct? I get only 100-200 AVG RAC per day on my newer machines(Sempron 3400+,X2 4400+,X2 5200+) And 20-40 on the older boxes(Athlon 2400+, Intel 3.0GHZ Prescott)

Those new 8400's look the sweetest. Price is up $50 USD to $260 now.

That could be my next silent vorpal bunnny of death #Mad "with big pointy teeth" WE will meet again oh great shrubber. To the stat charts AWAY #ni-1

Thank you oh great shrubber Al Dente:) Have not got into HTML coding much. I have added that link and hopefully it will show up in every post from now on. Total RAC is now 1600+ : Laughing About to break into the top 200 overall on our team. Another few months and I will swap out my 4400+ for a Phenom with the new stepping. Or maybe just add another new box with an 8400 intel chip. Got to sell off a few of these older boxes cluttering my space first though. The missus says. "No more computers till you get rid of some of the ones you already have" I like to eat and sleep in my bed so I guess I will do as she says. Rolling Eyes

Keep crunching and posting and the world will be a better place.

Just updating my stats. Been quietly crunching away and building up my cores and RAC. Now up to 6300+ RAC on 16 cores. That puts me up to 61st place on the team. Watch out Sir Robin's Minstrels and Papa Smurf I have my eye on your spots next. HeHeHe. Been reading about the new CUDA aps but they do not seem to be quite ready for prime time. Crying or Very sad My next big move will be an I7 machine when my income tax refund gets here in a few months. Was quite happy with my AMD machines but since I built an E7200 (not even overclocked) box for $500.00 that DOUBLES the RAC of my 4200+ machine. I see that the blue men have all but put the nail in the spiders heart. #evil

Wish everyone the best and happiest of a new year. Keep crunching and keep posting your trials and tribulations for all to hear. #ni-1

Ahh, But I just ordered a core 2 duo laptop today....

It will be up and running by Wednesday for sure.

I am also thinking of making a huge stink with Dfi about those 4 bad MoBos. I will settle for 8 or 10 cheap intel mobos in trade, I think.

If you really want to build your farm you can build a Q6600 for $202.14 for the cpu and mobo with integrated graphics. you still need memory, psu, hard drive & case. unless you are like me and have lots of those.
