Last week I upgraded my Boinc version to 5.10.30 . Since then any WU for any of the projects, when it is activly running, is running at High Priority. Currently there is a WU for Seti that the deadline is Feb. 26 and it is running at High Priority.

This is only happening on the PC (XP SP2) and not the Laptop (Vista). I have reset every project on the PC to no avail.

Any ideas?

Yeah, mine does that too. I don't see why, it doesn't run any faster, it just says "Running High Priority". There is always plenty of time to get them in even when the benchmarks say 15 hours for what I know is a 3-4 hour unit.

Ps: mine has been doing it since at least 5.10.28 I think even earlier.

Ditto.

I think it's when there isn't enough time to finish all the work cache at the shares you've set before deadlines, so BOINC Manager has to override your settings.

Odd. It does it even when it has worked the WUs dows to 2 or 3 on the machine.

Oh well.

It doesn't do it all the time. but it will on occasion. different machines with the same specs and return dates don't act the same. I just ignore it.

I find it happens most on "badly-behaved" projects (SHA-1 & uFluids amongst others, not mentioning any names).

Looking back, if my BOINC Manager requests, say, 6 hours work, these projects seem to send 30 ½ hour shrubs, which triggers the High Priority mode.

Perchance they're trying to up their projects rating in the overall scheme of things, or maybe it's just sloppy programming. Laughing

On the PC it is happening on, I am running Cosmology, Einstein, Poem, Seti, Rosetta and TSP. Whenever any of them are running now, they are usually in High Priority mode. So unless they are all "Badly Behaved", that is not the case for me.

you know?

now that I think about it... It did seem to happen just after a reinstall of windows or Boinc. Perhaps it will fix itself after the comp settles in and the actual crunch time levels out.

As long as it is still crunching, it's not a problem for me.

Actually I think AL has it. When I only ran Rosetta and Einstein I never had this happen (same Boinc client as I have now). However when I added TSP (possibly a "badly-behaved" project) I started getting it. I think the TSP project code downloads too much work, which then causes Boinc, not the individual projects, to set the status to High Priority due to it now having too much work....and as a result Einstein, Rosetta or TSP can all now be set to High Priority. I'll bet if I dropped TSP my High Priority problem would go away...but im not 100% sure.

the other thing to look out for is project that enforce short WU turnaround times, this has the result of prioritising their WU's over everyone else's

All of my WUs for all of my projects run for their alloted time as "HP". After the alloted time, they shift to "Waiting to run", and others then go into "HP" mode.

** spoke too soon, a SETI is running in normal mode now but a Cosmo in in HP mode....

I know that this is an old post but I just downloaded a cpdn beta WU at 293 hours and my cosmo all went to High Priority. I think Sir Brian has it right, when Boinc realises that it can't complete all WU's and maintain user % settings it goes into Panic mode, and I think that this is its way of telling you that your requested settings are going to be ignored.

If you didn't already gather, High Priority is the new name for EDF mode (Earliest Deadline First).

I dropped TSP from my Quad and sure enough, nothing is running as High Priority now. I guess Rosetta and Einstein know how to play nice with Boinc and will not download too much work at one time.

I'm still getting it on this PC. I even uninstalled Boinc and reinstalled it....unfortunately I didn't delete ANY of the folder on the drive, so it had all the projects still registered and nothing changed. Confused

it's not really an issue. I run cosmo and Milkyway. Milkyway downloads 20 units at a time and they all have short return dates, so everything goes to H.P. mode. If I were to stop getting milky then everything would go as normal.

As long as all your work is getting in on time don't worry about it. Wink
