I've been playing around with a QX9650 ES that fell into my lap on Monday.

I chucked it in my hot rig to see what it could do, and did I get a big surprise or what. Here's the specs of my rig, it's only for testing and not really for performance :

Asus P5K-E WiFi AP
CellShock DDR2-1000 4-4-4-12 2x 1GB
QX9650 3.0GHz, FSB 1333, 12Mb cache
Ancient 7600GT
Nesteq 500W Modular PSU
Stock Intel Air Cooler

First I tried it at stock speed with stock memory and latency. Using two VMWare clients each with a 1760 pointer - I got 2200 PPD each client = 4400 PPD.

Now I max out my FSB, cranked up to the CPU to 4GHz, got the RAM to 1333 at 5-5-5-15, added a little extra RAM and NB volts to get stable. Same two VMWare clients, same two WUs, and I get 3500 PPD each per client = 7000PPD.

Running native SuSE Linux at the same OC gives me 2x 1440 pointers at 2800 PPD each = 5600PPD. The CPU isn't 100% stable here but I gave it some more volts and pushed it up another 160 MHz to 4160. The brute has now been running for over 2 hours and the CPU temp is only 51 deg (air cooled, on the bench). I'm not anywhere near the limit and this thing is punching out nearly 6000 PPD. The pull at the mains is only 230W Shocked

Ah bannocks no sooner posted than it's spit out one of these WUs with an EUE. Have turned the volts up to 1.45 and rebooted. Running prime now.

Mains power draw has gone up quite a bit, now 275W. Finished the first prime cycle on all four cores.

Seems to be stable so far. But that might just be that last Doobie Bros talkin Very Happy

There's a Q6600 equivalent Penryn slated for launch in mid Jan, I think the model # is Q9450. The tray price for 1000 units is USD 316. In real money including Gordon's slice (fat bar steward) that'll be 150-175 quid.

The Q6600 G0 prices will crater soon as these low end 9xxx are released. Take yer pick.

How you like our new home here?

PM me and let's do some beers over Xmas. I'm in Surrey.

Nice perforrance figures there BC Cool

I've been waiting for the more budget friendly penryns to turn up. Wonder how the next gen Xeon dual cpu boxs will perform ?

A bit off-topic, but i picked up a bargain tastic (£28 in vat! Factory re-furb) Asus PE something motherboard today. It has an Nvidia 650Sli Cipset. Going to replace the Wheezing Wendle with it tomorrow.

Anybody know if these chipsets clock very well ? I've not had one since the Socket 939 nforce days, and my Dfi board at the time was wicked, so im hoping for good things.

The 650 is an OK rather than a great clocker. Suffers from droop (Asus p5-n E SLI)

Congrats BC! I've been thinking about posting a little summary table every once in a while to show how things would have been, had we not moved to pastures new. I'd have skinned a certain lizard by now! Maybe you'd have had a few words along the lines of deserving kudos to make you feel all warm and special inside!
