I just installed Ubuntu 64-bit on a machine, and I thought I'd try out Folding on it for a short while.
However, even though the Stanford site claims that the SMP client is 64-bit only, the 'fah6' application appears to be a 32-bit executable.
What's the score here?
Will I need to run the SMP client in 32-bit mode?
If so, would it be better to simply run the 32-bit version of the OS?

Because I first type './fah6', and nothing happens, and then I type 'file fah6', and get the reply that it is a 32-bit x86 executable.

Have you tried

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

I don't know how it works, I just know how to get it to work. Confused

also your first thing to do is run the "-configonly" flag

Yes, the ia32-libs would work, since that would let me run 32-bit code. However, I still think it's a bit weird since the Stanford folding page claims that the SMP client is a 64-bit linux client. Confused

I get the question, but have you got it to work?

fah6 is just the program that spawns the 64-bit processes (mpiexec, FahCore_a1.exe).

You need to be able to run 32 as well as 64 bit.

Daft question, you did download the 'nix client, not the Windoze one didn't you?

I started out with the 32-bit version of Ubuntu, and the client was only using 1 core, so I read more closely on the webpage and saw it was 64-bit.
So I installed the 64-bit version of Ubuntu, and then the program did not start at all.
That's why I got confused.

Now I installed the ia32 libs, so the program starts again, but it still only uses one core.
Will it eventually start using more cores?

It would appear that it's working on project 2149, which is listed as a Gromacs unit Confused

Um...I don't see why the SMP client would be for 64-bit OSes only if the actual executable is 32-bit. Are you sure you downloaded the right one?

UPDATE: I just downloaded it to see for myself, and file does report a 32-bit Linux executable. More interestingly, the md5-sum doesn't match. F@H says it's supposed to be

4845d3e7c39f5d3b04e9cd25af8b5e9c

but I get

2d2ffd6345d7280648f956abf16ac869

I think they may have posted the wrong client.

Perhaps they managed to copy the new 6.0 beta version of the single core client to the same folder, and thus overwriting the SMP client.
It's Stefan all over again! Surprised

The horror... The horror...

That would also explain the recent Stanford power outage Rolling Eyes

I'm guessing you didn't include the -smp switch, you've picked up a normal wu there. Restart the client with ./fah6 -local -verbosity 9 -oneunit and let that wu finish, at which point the client will stop and not download the next wu. Restart with ./fah6 -smp -config -local -verbosity 9, just double-check everything appears to be set (name,117,passkey,'no','no','big','yes','idle','no','10',mem,'yes','no',machine id) and it should go ahead and pull a smp wu and get going. You should see the four fah processes right from the start and 1000 points plus should be yours by the end!

Ok, so you download the bloody SMP client, and it won't actually use more than one core unless you use a -smp switch? Confused

Can anyone see a design flaw here?

No?

I'll try this when I get home tonight.

Do you have to give it a password, or is that optional?

The windows client needs a password to be set on your account to run, but with ubuntu I've never needed to set one specially to run the smp client. My accounts do have passwords on ubuntu though, so I can't say for sure that you don't need one though, but they're set to login automatically so it's not exactly a bind.

The version 6 client is an all-in-one, it combines the old client with the smp one. You'll be flying in no time, it's just something you have to get used to, I guess!

There was a campus wide power outage at Stanford on the 12th which is still causing problems (e.g. the Collection Servers aren't up yet).

Your unit will transmit when they get it sorted.
