Recently (in the last hour) the picture on my pc has taken to blinking out (going black) for a split second at times. Usually when I move the mouse around quickly or a full screen window comes up that refreshes a lot.

Any Ideas?

1) Check your video card temps. unlikely
a) Update your drivers. ( video and mouse )

2) Check your task manager and see if anything nasty is running. if not sure what it is Google it. ie mdm.exe

3) Check your memory, make sure that it is all there in task manager or cpuZ and make sure that it is correctly plugged in and also not too hot.

4) Run Hijack this and make sure that your system is clean.

This is for a XP machine. I don't know about linux or mac.

Ps: It is summer, have you dusted out your box lately?

Update....

The machine rebooted itself. Don't know whay.

I had the pc open 2-3 days ago and it wasn't dusty enough to warrent getting the canned air out.

It seems to do it when during a refresh. I decided to open something that causes a lot of refreshes (boinc tasks tab). It was blinking constantly. As soon as I closed boinc, it went back to doing it not too often.

I don't think it is anything too nasty. I am running norton anti virus and a spyware program that are pretty good, and there have been no alerts, so I am thinking it might not be that.

I'm currently leaning towards the video card......I did hear a pop from the general direction of the pc a few days ago (that's why I had it open)

Thanks for the reply Papa

last week my sons comp was artifacting so I pulled the video card and found the paste on the gpu was liquid. So I cleaned it with alcohol and replaced it with arctic silver 5 and now it plays supreme commander with just fine.

ps: I hate norton. it is a resource hog. You might want to try AVG b4 buying norton again.

GPU is the graphics card. Just like the CPU, it's got a thermal paste on it and a heatsink and fan. And just like most OEM stuff, the paste used is junk, and the heatsink and fan is little better.

Try changing your refresh rate (right-click desktop, Properties, Settings, Advanced, Monitor) to higher and lower values if you can, to see if it makes any difference. If the video card is nVidia flavored, download RivaTuner which will let you monitor temperatures as well as bump the fan speed up. ATI cards have a similar utility, I'm just not familiar with them any more.

Oh, ok.

It is an Nvidia (GEforce fx 5200). No fan on it, but the is a heat sink. a few months ago I put a slot fan with 2 fans in next to it. 1 fan can be aimed around the case (I pointed it right at the heatsink. THe other is an exhaust fan, so it sucks the air out. It seems to be running ok.

I think tomorrow I am going to pull the video card out of the old Win98 pc I have and try it to see if that makes a difference.....

Wish me luck.

Problem solved....

It was the video card. When I got it out the capacitors (3 of the 4 anyway) looked like they leaked a bit, like an old battery does when it's been in the radio too long.

New card in (upgraded to the next 1 ($1.89 more how do you pass on that?)), install the drivers and TADA! Happy John

There was a big lawsuit regarding capacitors a couple of years ago. I lost 2 motherboards and 1 video card myself. Just chalk it up as a loss and go on. The card you have is worth about $30.00. Not a big loss. #ni-1

For me (thankfully the video card was at near the bottom of the case (only the sound card was below). And also thankfully I had (a few months ago) installed a slot fan BETWEEN the video and sound cards. So the drippings ended up on the fan and not the sound card. #Beer

Are you sure you're not over-paying?

I hope not - one of those would melt the bag, and who knows what damage a Farty fart would do when let loose on Ni!-bay.
