Right you lot ! Rissen up !

Ga-Grizz the now impecunious has had some issues with two boxes lately .
First one WAS a Home Theatre setup , that decided to inSINerate itself
Saved the PSU , DVD R/W , umm , keyboard , mouse , sound card (I think), TV card
and the floppy drive .
Spinrite(tm) managed to save most of the media data .
However , the the one saved HD was also the ONLY HD on this ex-system , and it is commpletly Buggered
for booting from .
A new HD gives me a bootable re-built system (dual AMD MP 1800's -he-he!) .
But Grizz wants some stuff on the damaged disk (think drivers that I don't have - even the interwet) .
I do not want to extract info (data) from this HD and then ref0rmat , (or really throw the HD away anyway ) as in my experiance , this do
not guarantee data integrititty , I would rather repair the orininal OS (after convoluted back up)
to give me a fighting chance of keeping the recovered data , as I do not want to spin the disk more than necessary
Repairing the OS is the best option (in my "limited" years of fixing busted PC's .
Now the help I need , is , when repairing a broken OS (in this instance Win XP Pro ) , the method I have
used in the past (think Win 2000 Pro and below) was very straightforward , BUT Win XP does not want to play .
Yeh - I know , buy an upgrade XP CD or some sutch , but no more moneys , and Grizz does not think that will work
to my satisfaction anyway .
There was a way of repairing (reinstalling without looseing data ) an OS (I think SHoE proposed it ) , but I cannee remember the method .
Help appreciated .

Second problem is on a dual MoBo with 2 off AMD 242 CPU's (2 cores total) running Win 2000 Pro ,upgraded to 2 off
AMD 275 (4 cores total) , The one I upgraded before (hence Impecuniosity) , two off AMD 248 and Win XP , to 2 off AMD 275 CPU's
went through no probs , OS recognised the number of 4 cores installed . Win 2000 refuses to do this .
What is the "fix" without reinstalling OS etc ?

Sorry for the long post , but Da-Grizz is lazy .

If you have the XP install disk..
Boot from it..
It gives (after much startup bla bla blah)

Install XP
or
System recovery console. (this is DOS prompt only, usefull only if you know exactly what to do)

Choose Install XP

next choice is

New installation or repair existing
Choose repair existing.

I was able to repair a hard drive corrupted when my mobo hdd controler died, and it went pretty well. (even though my hdd was making odd noises by then)

of course DaGrizzs Mileage may Vary, but it worked for me.

I don't know the URL right off hand, but do a search for "Windows XP in-place upgrade". It does an "over-write" instead of a full install.

Sometimes swearing in your native langauge does not work. I have found swearing at it in a foreign language appears to get better results.

PS- I might have mis-understood originally. If your have Win XP installed, it should deal with all 4 cores, Win 2K will not see more than 2 cores.

Windows 2000 Professional was designed as the desktop operating system for businesses and power users. It is the basic unit of Windows 2000, and the most common. It offers greater security and stability than many of the previous Windows desktop operating systems. It supports up to two processors, and can address up to 4 GB of RAM. The system requirements were a Pentium Processor @133MHz or greater, at least 64 MB of RAM, 650 MB of hard drive space, and a CD-ROM drive (recommended: Pentium II, 128 MB of RAM, 1 GB of hard drive space, and CD-ROM drive).
* Windows 2000 Server products share the same user interface with Windows 2000 Professional, but contain additional components for running infrastructure and application software. A significant component of the server products is Active Directory, which is an enterprise-wide directory service based on LDAP. Additionally, Microsoft integrated Kerberos network authentication, replacing the often-criticised NTLM authentication system used in previous versions. This also provided a purely transitive-trust relationship between Windows 2000 domains in a forest (a collection of one or more Windows 2000 domains that share a common schema, configuration, and global catalogue, being linked with two-way transitive trusts). Furthermore, Windows 2000 introduced a DNS server which allows dynamic registration of IP addresses.
* Windows 2000 Advanced Server is a variant of Windows 2000 Server operating system designed for medium-to-large businesses. It offers clustering infrastructure for high availability and scalability of applications and services, including main memory support of up to 8 gigabytes (GB) on Physical Address Extension (PAE) systems and the ability to do 8-way SMP. It has support for TCP/IP load balancing and enhanced two-node server clusters based on the Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) in the Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition.[24] A limited edition 64 bit version of Windows 2000 Advanced Server was made available via the OEM Channel. It also supports failover and load balancing.
* Windows 2000 Datacenter Server is a variant of the Windows 2000 Server that is designed for large businesses that move large quantities of confidential or sensitive data frequently via a central server. As with Advanced Server, it supports clustering, failover and load balancing. Its minimum system requirements are normal, but it was designed to be capable of handing more advanced hardware - for instance it was capable of supporting computers with up to 32 CPUs and 64 GBs RAM.

Two processors, as in two sockets, not cores. you can have as many cores as you like.

Same as Windows XP Professional, they support up to two physical processors, but the number of cores is largely irrelevant (up to 128 cores )
It does use all four, even though task manager only shows two windows.

Re: your hard drive. you can re-install windows to the original windows folder on your hard drive with out formating the drive. Just choose leave the file system intact when choosing where to install it.

Option 2 is to install windows on another HD as a dual boot system and then to rewrite the damaged files on the old drive from the new operating system, This is my preferred way of fixing a corrupt OS.

Thanks all , indeed the poor thing was dismembered and various parts suitably intered Twisted Evil

I found I did not in the end need the (suposed) special driver for an esoteric DVD W/R , ultra thin DVD drive that I had found via the net , but alas were no longer available with no web site up etc .
The recovery method I used in the end was indeed another hard disk as master and a purchased XP MCE upgrade disc ($ #Mad ) , only to discover that it was the DVD drive , not its driver wich was faulty , would read/write as a CD , but DVD function was dead .
Went with M$ MCE upgrade , as also Showshifter had also gone down the tubes , and even the purchased copy with correct code would not allow an install as it needs to connect to a now non existant web site Rolling Eyes
M$ MCE is a piece of $hit , Showshifter was far superior , even though it only supported one TV card .
A suitably purchased new DVD/ROM W/R (alas not ultra thin - more metal bashing) completed the Theatre , and once I had recovered all of the recoverable data from old disk , that HD was shown the FULL extent of my ire !
