I couldn't believe this, actually still don't even after reading it.

For those of you who have seen Gattaca will know that is the direction our society is headed.
Personaly as one who suffers from Genetic defects and also why I had a vasectomy to not pass those defects on, if there were a way to find that perfect genetic combination/mutation where the defects weren't passed on I'd be all for it. It would end millions of people's suffering and would prevent someone from suffering like I have.
But for those of you who belive life begins at conception will never agree to this even though all screening is done while its still a lump of cells not even anything recognizable as a mammal cept dna. _________________ Smoke-em if you got-em I do.. |

Not being a professional ethicist my opinion may not carry much weight, but one has to remember that life is inherently unfair. Giving your child the tools at birth for better chances of success isn't something I would blame people for wanting.
All of my genetic defects are of the sort that they won't kill me outright, at least till my late 60's, but I would want to screen for such things in my own children.
Gattaca is certainly a potential scenario, but the message of that story is also that human nature can overcome all and just being "perfect" doesn't assure anything. _________________ A Shrubbery for Prez. Let's put more bushes in the whitehouse.

While the "norm" for the designer babies is the "perfect" baby, this article dealt with potential parents having a "defect" or "disability" (ie deaf, dwarf, etc.) ensured in the child/children. _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

We are a long way still from understanding the human genome. Some things that are considered to be defects exist for good reasons, (ex: a single copy of the gene for sickle-cell anemia confers resistance to malaria). Creating "designer babies" may have implications have beyond what we can foresee, and may just be trading one problem for another.
I suppose that since natural selection no longer applies to humans (not like it used to anyway), that sooner or later we will have to learn to do it for ourselves. Ethical dilemmas abound!

While this article specifically addressed "disabilities" merely for the shock and ratings value, the debate doesn't change no matter what trait you are selecting for or against.
What we consider "normal" is only one possibility.
Personally, I would never allow my offspring to be selected merely on the basis of appearance or certain traits, but I'd certainly be interested in removing certain genomes in my pool that lead to early death and debilitating conditions. _________________ A Shrubbery for Prez. Are you SURE about that???
Jabs at Sir Fart aside, this is going to happen, and I doubt there can be much control over it.

SHoE,
There are certain conditions that require the most drastic measures be taken lest the world decend into 10,000 years of darkness with some evil overlord terrorizing us all. Not that I think Sir Fart is the anti-christ or anything. That's merely an assumption on other people's part.
And human nature what it is, anything that can be done will be done eventually. _________________ A Shrubbery for Prez. Let's put more bushes in the whitehouse.

Remember that this artice was dealing with the intentional inclusion of a "defect" into the babies, not removel of one!
I think the best way to go about making babies is the time honored old fashioned way - drunk! _________________ Fetch me the Holy Hand Grenade!

Since Hitler began the Volkwagen program it's a pretty safe bet to assume they were built in '57 .
I knew it was only a matter of time before my name got dragged into a discussion on defective people . _________________ Ni ! Ni !
