I was running BOINC, Rosetta@Home and World Community Grid, with that I run Folding@Home. I had 2 new PC's crash and took them in to my PC guy. Seems BOINC was eating up all my virtual memory. My question is WHY? I took BOINC off 2 of my 3 PC's and am now running it on only one, with a resource share of 20% on one and 30% on the other. Is this a fair amount as I'm still running F@H on all 3, plus the one at work.

I am really tired of buying new PC's every 2-3 months.

Any help? TIA #ni-1 Suggestions?

Hiya, Alpha!

Just my two cents, but you could avoid some of these problems by only running one project per machine. As long as you have enough physical RAM (minimum 512MB) the use of virtual memory should be minimal. Keep in mind that the virtual memory is actually space on the hard drive, and heavy use of VM can really shorten a hard drive's life. If you do have enough physical RAM, the only reason to run multiple projects on one machine (especially since you have several at your disposal) is if you have a multi-processor or multi-core setup. Then, you can assign different projects (or two instances of the same project) to separate cores/processors. By doing this, both your production and hardware life could improve!

Good luck!

Thanks Frank, I will run BOINC on that one PC with F@H and F@H on the other PC's. F@H has always held my heart.

Have a great rest of the weekend. Wink

This answer is a little late However, I just downloaded WCG and I noticed that it used A LOT more memory than Einstien... Like, more than Double system and virtual Memory. I am running with a gig of system and I have set my VM size to a constant 1.5 gig in Properties. on my machine right now WCG is using almost 300 meg VM. Einstien uses less than 150 meg.
