Has anyone tried the GPU beta client yet?

I'm not really in the market for a X1900 card, since they're quite expensive and very powerhungry, but it would be nice to know how the GPU project is progressing.

According to the Folding homepage you're supposed to be getting 660 (!!!) points per day from a single GPU, so I'm looking forward to be passed by a lot of single computer newbies in the near future... Rolling Eyes

the GPU beta client has had some major bugs so far, and without tweaking I think 400 PPD is more likely and as you have to give it a CPU too it is a real pain at the moment.

You mean you have to allocate 100% processor power from one core to be able to run a GPU WU?

Why is that? Shouldn't the CPU just send a bunch of data to the GPU and await the result?

It is to do with data mangement the CPU has to, for want of a better analogy tidy up the data and then send more to the GPU. I have it running on an AMD X2 3800 with one CPU folding and the GPU pretty much maxes out the other CPU.

Will do, it is changing very rapidly at the moment 2nd or 3rd version of the new core already.

X1900 series only at the mo.... Crying or Very sad it needs the 48 pixel pipelines this chipset provides...

I've got an X1600XT, which "only" has 12, so even that's not good enough....

BTW anyone with an X1000 series can use Avivo which can transcode movie files using the GPU as another CPU.... it converts a DVD movie to ipod video in about 10 mins on my new E6300!. it's a shame we cant use any GPU's horsepower in other projects....

Shh Sir brian, you can run it on your x1600 it just needs some tweaking and the results may be invalid due to some issue's with data corruption. vester and some other's at the FCF have done it.

This is from the Folding GPU Beta page:

Folding@Home wrote:
Will X1800 cards will be supported in the new client as well? What about any other ATI models (i.e. X1600 cards/RV530)?
At first, we will launch with support for X1900 cards only. X1800 cards do not provide the performance needed. These cards are actually quite different -- they have different processors (R520, R530 vs. the R580 [in the X1900 series]). The R580 makes a huge difference in performance -- its 48 pixel shaders are key, as we use pixel shaders for our computations. However, we are working to get reasonable performance from the X1800 cards (1/2 to 1/3 of the X1900) and we will likely support them soon (hopefully 1 month after the initial beta test roll out).

BTW, good to see you again Anti. It's been a while. #ni-1

I recently tried a shrub with an 1950XT it took 18hrs for a 386 pointer. The bad is if you run folding client with GPU client it kills output of both. I don't feel that the number of points is worth the stuttering in graphics. I can get more than 800 ppd with my mac book pro with the smp client, so I don't understand why the GPU client which is supposed to prosses 10x - 30x more is worth less.

It's because they are intentionally under-scoring work done by them. I don't know why, it seems like it should be the same work for the same points, but there was a mention in the forums over on Free-DC. I could be wrong, but I think this is what they were talking about.

There's additional discussion on the official Folding forums (now that the PS3 has shown up) talking about how the GPU cient has to duplicate some of its own work because of ... ummm ... lack of Generality Wink

The PS3 has to do that for some units, which is why they're pushing only the 'easy' optimized-for-PS3 units down, and I'm averaging 900+ PPD :ni
